Architecture as code
Architecture as code describes the system architecture as text in version control – with branches, reviews and automated checks, like source code. Diagrams are derived from it and do not have to be drawn by hand.
Also known as: Model as code, Models in Git
Software teams have worked with Git, merge requests and CI for years. Architecture as code (also: model as code) brings this way of working to system architecture and system models – possible because SysML v2 has a textual notation.
What changes?
- History: every change has an author, a date and a reason in its commit.
- Parallel work: branches instead of locked model areas.
- Reviews: changes are checked as a diff in the merge request.
- CI: checks run on every push, for example whether all requirements are realized.
In itemis PRISM
PRISM reads the model from the Git repository, shows branch and status in the header of every page, commits only files in the model folder and never pushes on its own. prism check checks the model in CI.
