SysML v2 textual notation
The textual notation is the text form of SysML v2 models. It is equivalent to the graphical notation and makes models editable with an editor, Git and diff.
Also known as: Textual notation, SysML v2 as text
In SysML v2, text is not an export but a full notation: every model element can be written as text, and the OMG defines its grammar formally.
Why text?
- Versioning: Text can be managed in Git – with branches, diffs and merge requests, like source code.
- Review: A model change is a readable diff, not a swapped binary file.
- Automation: Scripts, CI pipelines and AI assistants can read and write text.
Example
requirement <'SR-08'> 'Leak detection' {
doc /* The system shall detect a flow above the expected rate within 60 s. */
}
action <'F4.1'> 'Detect Leak' {
satisfy 'SR-08';
}
What about diagrams?
Text alone is hard to read for many stakeholders. Tools like itemis PRISM therefore generate diagrams from the text: the text stays the single source, the diagrams are derived and never maintained on their own.
