Requirements traceability
Traceability links every requirement to its origin, the requirements derived from it and the elements that satisfy it – traceable in both directions.
Also known as: Traceability
Traceability answers two questions: why does this element exist? And: is this requirement implemented? In regulated industries it is often mandatory.
Relationships in SysML v2
- Derivation: a system requirement is derived from a stakeholder requirement.
- Satisfy: a function or part satisfies a requirement (
satisfy). - Allocate: the function runs on a part – so the chain reaches down to the hardware.
Finding gaps
A requirement that nothing satisfies and that nothing is derived from is a gap. Tools can report such gaps automatically. itemis PRISM offers a requirement explorer with origin, derivations and realizing elements, and a requirements landscape that bundles the relationships between topics into strands of different widths.
